The carpark was so full when we arrived in the Hunua Ranges this Easter weekend that we had to backtrack and park on the road. Unsurprising, given the strong sunshine and crisp autumn air, but off-putting. We decided to walk the Cossey-Massey loop, hoping that the majority of people would be taking the much shorter Hunua Falls track, and fortunately we were correct.
Going counterclockwise, the track climbs steeply up to the very ridge of the ranges. For the most part it is enclosed within the canopy of trees, but occasionally you are afforded far-reaching views over the surrounding countryside. There is a dedicated viewing platform over the reservoir, where we stopped for the baby to stretch out and have a snack. Then setting off again, we plunged down towards the muddy water. A portion of the track was closed here, with a road diversion in place – a beautiful one though, shadows falling long over blue asphalt as the sun dipped and danced among the trees. In places huge landslides, presumably damage from this summer’s cyclones and storms.
Towards the end, a suspension bridge crosses over the Cossey gorge. The waters a cloudy aquamarine, the setting sun gold between the trees. What a dreamy way to spend an afternoon.

There is also a shorter Suspension Bridge Loop in the Hunua Ranges – read about it here.
